  1. I would recommend a good quality over under 12 gauge.

With a semi-auto or pump you would be concerned about cycling the gun for the next shot,  detracting from the quality of your first (or second) shot.   You could also run a foul of the limit on the number of shells in the gun.  With a double barrel/over under you will never have that problem.

Over unders and double barrels have class,  vs a cheap auto or pump.   An over under has an easier sight picture for a new shooter....Two barrels could cause some confusion.

Lastly,  with a new shooter,  those around you may have a real concern about you shooting them....With a over under,  you can break the action open so it is very clear,  even at a distance that your gun is NOT ready to shoot.    Something you can not do with an auto or pump.

  2. I would recommend a 870 Express Super Magnum.   You mentioned geese.  This allows you to shoot 3 1/2" shells.   I personally prefer the 870 over a Mossberg 500.  I have owned several of both including the Super Magnum, and like the smooth action of the 870.

  3. I would actually recommend a Mossberg over the Remington.  For two reasons:  One, the Mossberg's safety is much easier to reach while maintaining a firing grip;  Two, the slide release is also much easier to reach while maintaining a firing grip.

In terms of price and reliability, there is no major difference between the two manufacturers.  Find a gun shop where you can try out a Mossberg, you'll see what I mean about the controls.

  4. Remington 870 Express 20 gauge.....

    Remington Express 870 Youth model...

If your already familiar with this shotgun then it would be an excellent choice.....

  5. Get the 870. If you are already using one it will be better than trying to learn a new gun. I got one for my 14th birthday (before they had youth models) and had no problem handling it. Very dependable in the field.
