    The former Serbian province of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence on Sunday (February 17) and became recognized as the world's 195th country on Monday. The United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, and other countries have officially recognized Kosovo as an independent country. With international recognition, Kosovo meets the criteria for independent country status and became one of the world's newest countries. Nonetheless, Serbia continues to claim that Kosovo remains a Serbian province and Russia and China are against the declaration.
