  1. Monaco means "Monk" in English and "Lo" is usually an article.

Your last name can be translated literally into "TheMonk". It is possible that one of your ascendants was very religious, or living near a monastery, or he was a farmer working as a peasant in lands owned by the Vatican.

Otherwise, it can come from the name of the Principality of Monaco in south France.

In any case, I would opt for the first one.

  2. I checked 3 sites to try to locate a  meaning of the surname w/ no luck.  All LoMonacos entering the U.S. were from Italy, but not the same towns.

If you would give us your grandfather's first name (an approximate birth year and/or what state he lived in), we could try and locate his ship manifest and/or U.S. Census info.  The ship manifest (depending on the year) may have the town of birth or town of residence on it.  The U.S. Census would generally state the year of entry into the U.S. Sometimes the year is not accurate, but it would give us a ballpark year to search.

If you feel uncomfortable, including his first name, you can always email me and  will try and assist you.

I just located what appears to be a very nice restaurant named LoMonacos.  I don't know if you are familiar w/ it or not.  http://www.lomonacos.com/about-restauran... . It is located in Branford, CT.

    Good luck...:)

  3. LoMonaco means The Monk

It's definetly from south Italy, impossible to tell exactly where.
