You'll need to know the state in which the marriage/divorce occurred. Once you know that, you'll need to visit that state's county website and check their public records database.

Try the local county records website of the county where the marriage took place.

there is no centralized database.

you have to know where the marriage/divorce took place and contact the state that it happened it to find out.  Ideally, you should contact the courthouse in the county or city that it took place in.  These are public records, so if you know who you are looking for you can find the info.
