Asteroids are small, rocky objects found within the solar system. They vary in composition, some are rock solid while others are loosely grouped debris and others are made of metal. Its low gravity usually does not allow them to become spherical shape, as seen by the many found asteroids that have collided. Some have their own small or travel with other similar sized asteroid moons.

     The smaller asteroid

There is no particular asteroid known to be the smallest. Using telescopes, astronomers have observer asteroids that are tens of meters in diameter. Current theories of the formation of the asteroids say they are remnants of the creation of the solar system and also formed due to collisions between asteroids, the disintegration of the collision of planets or moons more planets large . Therefore there is no doubt that there are very small asteroids that orbit the sun and astronomers have not yet observed.

    The largest asteroid

The largest asteroid is about 590 miles (949.51 km) long and is known as Ceres. It was named based on the Roman goddess of grain by Giuseppe Piazzi, who discovered it in 1801. Being the largest asteroid, Ceres was also the first to be discovered. Ceres orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt and usually is 2.6 astronomical units from Earth. Since Ceres is so large, it is sometimes called dwarf or minor planet (along with other asteroids large ). Ceres takes 4.6 years to orbit around the sun and makes its rotation once every 9.075 hours.

    The closest asteroid to Earth

Like other bodies in the solar system, asteroids vary in their distance from the Earth to orbit the Sun as asteroids are discovered approaching Earth by the Program 's Near-Earth Object NASA several times a year. The closest an asteroid has been to Earth without impactarla was in 2004, when the 2004 FH 100 feet (30.48 m) wide passed 26,500 miles (42,647.61 km), or 3.4 diameters land above the earth's surface. 2004 FH was discovered only a few days before it passed near Earth, astronomers predict that similar sized objects are close to the same distance from the Earth once every two years undetected.
