Dumpster diving is illegal in United States, as the dumpsters are located in the privately owned properties, however this law is imposed with varying degree of severety in different parts of the country. According to the SC of United States, there is no common defination regarding the  privacy of discarded material, therefore it becomes legal when not specifically prohibited by the state.

Believe it or not, it is illegal, but it rates so far down on the scale of crimes police will enforce, that they do not enforce it unless someone complains about it.
