What are classic songs to sing?

My singing teacher said that if I want to sing professionally I have to learn classic songs. She has not given me a list of them yet. Can any one tell me some? Thankyou.

Classic songs are the ones every generation will know. Here's a short list:

Anything from the Grease soundtracks

Barracuda

Smooth Operator

Goodies(I personally don't care for this one but lots like it)

Creep(TLC)

Walking on sunshine

Paint it Black

Anything by Earth Wind and Fire

Just remember that you pick songs you're best at, not just the ones you like. And you have to pick songs that will appeal to a wide audience and the general atmosphere you are entertaining.

For example, you wouldn't pick Respect for a room of slow dancing couples. And you wouldn't pick Over the rainbow for a crowd of rockers or hip hopsters. :) Good luck. It takes years to perfect this art, but the journey is a reward in itself. Keep practicing, and don't hurt yourself in the process of finding techniques that compliment your singing style. ^-^
