I can appreciate the excellent taste and delicate finish of an 18-year old single malt Glenlivet, but now I'm looking for something finer. What do you recommend?

  1. My favourite is Loch Dhu, but it's a personal thing.  Loch Dhu is a VERY dark single malt, and unfortunately it's very expensive. A bottle is about $350 U.S.  I used to be able to get it for about $6 a glass in Kansas City.  Really smooth and a little sweet.

  2. Highland Park 18 is excellent.  I prefer the islays (ardbeg, lagavulin, laphroaig, and talikser (yeah talsiker isn't an islay...)), but I wouldn't characterize them as smooth and delicate.

  3. Any 21 is likely to be very smooth. You've reached an aging where the wood has broken down most of the harsh flavors and mellowed the Scotch. I'm a fan of Glenfarclas, Balvenie, and Glenlivet 21 Archive.

I also like Springbank, although they're pricey and tough to find. Their 21 from 2003 was one of the best I've ever had, but it no longer exists. I haven't had their new 21 Campbelton yet.

  4. Single Malt's.  My friend, you have taste.  My 2 favorite ones are the Balvenie 21 year Portwood and 21 year Macallan.  Both will knock your socks.
