Wales’ Jamie Jones surges into 2012 China Open Round 1 after beating Hong Kong’s Marco Fu
England’s Jamie Jones will be heading to China soon to take part in the first round of the 2012 China Open as he defeated Hong Kong’s Marco Fu in the final qualifier by the score line of 5-1.
The Welshman played outstandingly in the qualifying session of the 2012 China Open at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield. Jones will be making his first appearance in the televised stages of any major ranking tournament. The Welshman scored an easy victory
over the Hong Kong potter firing some classy knocks after he went 1-0 down.
The World Number 21 Fu drew the first blood clinching the first scrappy frame quite easily after firing a classy knock of 75 to lead 1-0. Despite tumbling one frame down, Jones showed no signs of pressure and replied beautifully with marvellous clearances
of 95 and 102 to snatch the overall lead at 2-1.
The fourth frame was a bit scrappy as both potters went neck and neck but Jones finally finished it to extend his lead by 3-1. The competition was totally dominated by the Welsh potter after the interval as he cruised into the fifth frame win after pocketed
two superb knocks of 41 and 51 to move three frames up at 4-1.
Fu tried to bounce back into the game with a nice half-century break of 57 to trouble his opponent but missed on red. The 24-year-old Jones cleared the table with a decent 50-point clearance to claim the victory and book his spot in the initial round of
the 2012 China Open.
While speaking to the local media after winning the qualifier, Jones said, “I'm so pleased with how I played. I've admired Marco all the time when I was growing up. I'd have taken 5-4, anything, but to play like that and win 5-1 was just brilliant. I felt
I played really well.”
The World Number 42 added, “I've had so many text messages. I didn't realise how many people were waiting for me to qualify for a venue. It wasn't on my mind. I've got to the verge of the top 32 now, just by being consistent really and I'd have taken that
ahead of a venue at the start of the season. Booking the trip for Beijing is just a dream. I can't wait.”
Jones will be meeting the former World Snooker Champion, England’s Shaun Murphy in the opening round of the 2012 China Open.
