Volleyball Canada: Thunder Bay prepares for the big clash of women’s volleyball
The city of Thunder Bay in Ontario Canada prepares for a jam-packed volleyball action in the first week of February, 2011. The Ontario Volleyball Association is going to organise a two-day women’s volleyball tournament at the Lakehead Universtiy from February
5-6. The Canadian Women’s National Indoor Team will be featured as the guest team, while Lakehead Women’s Volleyball Team will serve at the hosts of this event. Additionally, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team will also take part in
the action.
The players and spectators are excited about the wonderful opportunity offered by Ontario Volleyball Association. It will surely be one heck of weekend as teams are fully prepared to demonstrate their skills on the court. The participation of the National
Team is something, which really adds great value to the tournament. The Lakehead University players and Ottawa Gee-Gees members will get a chance to contest their abilities with the national team players.
The head coach of Women’s Nation Team, Arnd Ludwig talked about the importance of exposure of local players at national level. He said the tournament will truly benefit them and motivate them for bigger competitions.
The OVA has played an instrumental role in organising this event but the real praise goes to sponsors of the campaign, the Ontario Trillium Foundation. In 2008, they awarded funds to Ontario Volleyball Association, which has now utilized the money to purchase
12 sport courts for this event.
The OVA Executive Director, Steve Carroll credited Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support to make this event happen. He said:
“the funding has allowed Ontario Volleyball to deliver programming to a community that may not otherwise have the opportunity to host an elite or international calibre event. Because of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Volleyball was able to bring
the Women’s National Team to Thunder Bay and make this weekend possible.”
Likewise, the mentor of Lakehead Thunderwolves Women’s Volleyball Team, Chris Green said:
"This is an exciting time for Volleyball in North Western Ontario and for us at Lakehead University. Through the Ontario Volleyball Association, the Canadian National Women’s Team and funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, our region’s players, coaches
and fans get to experience the absolute highest level of athletes in our sport.”
The players and coaches will also attend the on court coach and player development clinics. The local athletes and coaches will also show up at the volleyball clinics on January 6.
