Vancouver Island University sweeps Mount Saint Vincent University – Volleyball news
The Vancouver Island University mariners had a match with the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics on Thursday.
The match was part of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Women's Championship that is currently being hosted in Nanaimo. The venue of the match was the VIU.
The mariners were playing their first match of the tournament against the eighth ranked Mystics when they were able to hand out a defeat to their opponents by making a clean sweep over the Mystics. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 25-8,
25-13 and 25-12.
Marie Temple, who is the middle for the Mariners, expressed herself in the following manner at the press conference that was held after the match reached its close, “The nerves definitely kicked in and the anxiousness took a pretty strong hold. But now that
we've got a game under our belt it will help us embrace the atmosphere more.”
The coach of the Mariners, Shane Hyde, shared his views by making the following statements, “They're big, aggressive players, they'll swing hard, they've got a good defence, they've got a veteran setter who's played for five years, they're at nationals every
year. They're going to be ready to play for sure.”
The player who was able to earn himself the title of the player of the match was Temple. He was able to keep the pressure on his opponents by pulling off a total of five service aces in the entire match. Not only that, Temple also put in four of his kills.
The first set of the match started off with the Mariners coming out strong and taking the lead for themselves. The Mystics tried to close in the gap but they could not stop the Mariners from storming ahead and bagging themselves the opening frame of the
game at 25-8.
The performance of the Mystics improved in the second set but the effort still was not enough to stop the Mariners from securing themselves another win at 25-13. The third set of the game followed the same pattern as the second one and ended up with the
Mariners winning it at 25-12.
