US Governor Chris Christie excited about New Jersey hosting Grand Prix in 2013 – Formula 1 news
US Grand Prix chief Tavo Hellmund has welcomed the news of New Jersey also confirmed for hosting a Formula 1 race after Austin.
Governor Chris Christie confirmed on Tuesday that New Jersey will be hosting a street circuit on a 3.2-mile stretch, and the event is confirmed for the 2013 season.
New Jersey is planning on a street race along the Manhattan skyline, to hit the streets in June 2013. Chris Christie confirmed in a statement that it is going to be a street circuit around the Port Imperial area.
The Austin circuit will be making its debut in 2012, and Hellmund showed his excitement at the prospect of US hosting two races for Formula 1.
“I want to extend my congratulations to Leo [Hindery] and his team, as I know how much work they have put into making this happen,” said Hellmund. “When I walked the site a few years ago, the site's potential was obvious.”
“I am excited for the East Coast and feel Tuesday's announcement is yet another acknowledgement of the viability, fan interest, economic benefits and prestige an F1 Grand Prix event brings to a region,” he further added.
He also mentioned that he feels happy for East Coast and Tuesday’s announcement is testament to the feasibility and apparent support for the sport in the country, and in effect also increases the global attraction towards the world-class events.
Both circuits are going to be fantastic and for the most advanced form of racing, and it pleases the State to host such events.
New Jersey recently sealed the deal and confirmed a 10-year plan to host Grand Prix events in the city. There has been some speculation at the probable financial hurdle Austin circuit might face due to the budgeting required for the New Jersey circuit.
Recently, Korean Grand Prix organisers raised the issue of not being able to generate a profit and required the Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone to cut down the hosting fee to alleviate the deficit they face. This could be an issue for Austin as well, but
it remains to be seen how well they manage the finances at a time of constrained economies.
