I have to fill in a UK tax return for 2007 2008. However during that period i worked in Norway, Got paid in Norwegian Kronner and paid Norwegian tax .

The Norwegian tax is far higher than what it is in the UK. (48%)

I was still a UK resident during that time and spend approx 180 days in the country.

Am i able to claim back the difference in tax between the UK and Norway ?

Any other advice would be greatly accepted.

  1. No. David H is right. The UK government will not refund any tax paid to the Norwegian government.

You should complete the foreign income page of the Tax Return form and enter the amount you earned and the amount of tax paid in Norway. You will need to convert it to pounds sterling.

  2. Afraid not.  Because you were working in Norway, Norway has the right to charge its normal rate of tax on your Norwegian income.  And as a UK resident you remain liable also to UK tax on it.  Because Norwegian tax is higher than UK, the UK will treat the tax you paid in Norway as satisfying the UK tax due on the same income, but no more.
