Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has completed 100 goals in top-flight football.
The Englishman has joined an elite group of 20 strikers who have scored more than a century of goals in the English Premier League.
Defoe scored Tottenham’s second goal in a recent Premier League encounter against West Bromwich Albion. The striker’s fantastic 20-yard shot gave his side a 2-1 advantage but the Spurs failed to collect maximum points as West Brom’s Simon Cox scored a goal
to level the scores at 2-2.
Dropping two points have dented Tottenham’s hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League as they now trail Manchester City by a point.
Defoe has had an awful season by his standards. The 28-year-old has scored just 3 goals in 17 Premier League appearances, however, the striker claims that reaching the 100-goal mark has broken a psychological barrier and hopefully more goals will follow.
Furthermore, Defoe has admitted that a chat with the Spurs strikers’ coach Les Ferdinand has helped him break his barren spell as the Englishman was on the score-sheet for the first time since the start of March 2011.
Certainly, Defoe is taking advice from the right man as Ferdinand was a highly successful centre forward in his playing days and has 149 Premier League goals to his name. Defoe now has Ferdinand’s record in his sights and wants to beat him by reaching 150
goals.
He said, “I want to try and beat Les. I am 28 now and I still feel fit and sharp so you never know, He thinks I can do it. He said to me: 'You'll smash it'.”
Tottenham had a successful debut season in the Champions League as they were able to reach the last eight of the competition. The club would certainly want to dine at Europe’s top table again and with five rounds of matches remaining in the season, the battle
for the fourth spot between the Spurs and City is far from over.
