Top 10 players still in search of first major title – Part 1
Tiger Woods’ over-stretched absence from the top rankings for the last two years has actually served a bigger cause on the contrary. The sport has now evolved into a highly competitive and nail-biting phenomenon, overseeing many of the young trailblazers
making their mark in the recent events.
Darren Clarke’s much awaited victory at the Open Championship has been the only major title win by an experienced player and rest of the major winners are still in their 20’s. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer and US
Open champion Rory McIlroy, all have made the best use of Woods’ simmering vows which have kept him away from top-notch golf.
There remain however, several of the grizzled veterans in the sport who are still lurking for their first major victory even after performing brilliantly all over the world. Following is the list of the ten most celebrated players who have not won a major
title in their long careers and are still in search of the over-due triumph.
Lee Westwood
The first Englishman who finally brought an end to Woods’ record stretch of world number one at the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and reigned the summit for consecutive 17th months. Currently number two on the OWGR, Westwood is by far the
best English golfer in the recent times who has not won a major title in his career. He missed the Playoffs at 2008 US Open and also in 2009 Open Championship and finished off runner-up in 2010 Masters and Open Championship.
For the moment Westwood’s patience has finally ran out as the 38-year-old has decided to consult the psychological wizard, Doctor Bob Rotella, who has helped McIlroy and Padraig Harrington with their final round mental melt downs to eventually help them
win a major.
Luke Donald
Currently world number one on the OWGR, Donald is also crouching to barge into the coveted club of major winners, although coming close of winning one on several occasions. Often regarded as an expert for runner-up finish, Donald has worked meticulously
to improve his short game in the past few years, trying to make up for his shorter iron drives.
He secured the top slot for the first time when he overpowered Westwood at the BMW International Open. Donald posted another runner-up finish at WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club and will be heading with the right kind of form into the
final major of the season.
Jason Day
The 23-year-old Australian has made it a habit to stay in contention in all the appearances he has made in the current season. He finished runner-up in the Masters behind Schwartzel, posted another second in the US Open behind McIlroy and a joint 30th in
the Open Championship this year. He has a joint 10th finish at the PGA Championship last year and will be heading in the event this year brimming with confidence and overcharged spirit. Day finished for a joint fourth at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational
last week.
