Tommy Sugiarto beats Wong Ziliang Derek to grab the Iran Fajr International Challenge 2011 title
Malaysian badminton player, Tommy Sugiarto, has won the Iran Fajr International Challenge 2011 title against Wong Ziliang Derek of Singapore, in the Men’s Singles category in Tehran, Iran, on February 19.
The final showdown was a three-set thriller fight between the top two seeded players of the tournament and ended up in favour of the Malaysian shuttler with a 21-17, 18-21 and 21-11 score on the board.
Tommy Sugiarto, was the top seed in the event, continued his winning streak throughout the whole tournament including final battle and grabbed the title. The final match between the top seed of Malaysia and number five seed, Wong Ziliang, was a superb battle
comprising on three sets of quality badminton.
The opening set of the final match was a tight fight as both players were controlling the rallies by keeping the pace of the game high. The score remained quite close until the second-half of the set, where the Malaysian started to increase the speed of
his game and won the opening set by a 21-17 difference. The first-set win made the Malaysian shuttler more confident to make it a straight-set match.
However, in the second-set, the Singaporean player came in the court with other things in mind. This time, Wong Ziliang matched the pace of the game against the experienced Malaysian player. No player could manage to take a clear lead because of the strong
resistance put by the opponent. It was a display of top-class badminton as hard-to return smashes, tumbling net shots, long rallies and strong pushes were incorporated from both parties involved, in order to dominate the opponent shuttler.
The scores remained close until the ending points of the second-half, where the Malaysian made some mistakes at the crucial stage and made it easy for the Singaporean shuttler to win the second set by 21-18.  
The third-set of the final match was the highlight of Sugiarto’s superb skills, as he did not consume much time in the court and finished the game by a huge difference of 21-11 score. The Malaysian shuttler remained miles ahead of the Singaporean player
in the whole set. Wong Ziliang had no answer to the elevated game of the opponent, as the Malaysian remained in complete control of the game by dictating the pace of the rallies.
Sugiarto took the lead right from the beginning of the deciding game and maintained it until the interval. When he stepped on the court once again, it was a highlight of the previous game, as the Malaysian player reached 21 points, whereas, his opponent
was miles behind at 11 points.
