Texas Rangers close in on signing Adrian Beltre
The Texas Rangers are hoping they can finalise a deal for Adrian Beltre as the spring training period nears. The club, which made the World Series last season, is looking for another shot at glory. With Cliff Lee out of the pitching rotation, the Rangers
have the chance to make some extra payments across the free agency for additional players. Quite recently, Brandon Webb was acquired from the free market on a one-year deal.
Webb, who missed most of the last two years due to a shoulder injury, made his way to the clubhouse on a one-year deal. Now with the pitching order set for play, the batting order needs adjustment. Vladimir Guerrero, who was denied an option and arbitration
on continuing on as the club’s player, will most probably move elsewhere. That fact has led the club to Adrian Beltre. The top agent in the market is looking for a new club and a lucrative deal.
Nevertheless, with Beltre’s probable signing, the Rangers will look to put Michael Young on the designated hitter position. The longest serving Rangers’ player will be replacing Guerrero on the plate, and the position to make room for Adrian.
The Rangers have pursued Beltre for almost two weeks now and it seems the possibility of a deal is imminent. Once chased by the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Athletics, Beltre will most probably end up playing for the Rangers in 2011. Recent reports
suggest the third baseman was in Texas on Tuesday. The deal between him and the club is almost close to completion. The only thing left is his physical and once that’s done, the player will be a Texan club member.
Adrian’s agent, Scott Boras was also reported on, recently. The fabled middleman was expected to fly to Texas on the same day as Beltre. Boras was going to head to the state in order to finalise the deal and hold a press conference. The deal, which is allegedly
a $96 million package, lasting six years has a unique workout clause. The contract is reported to be adjusted according to matches played. A set of ball games are tied into the deal, which could see the package be availed in less than six years.
Nevertheless, this deal could become the second biggest contract signed after Alex Rodriguez penned a deal with the Texans, worth $252 million for 10 years.
