Steffen Deibler wins Men’s 100m butterfly heats - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial

German swimmer, Steffen Deibler, demonstrated his stupendous swimming skills in the Men’s 100m butterfly qualifying rounds, as he captured the fastest qualification spot on third day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The competition is a trial basis for German swimmers who seek to qualify for the national team to represent their country at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The 23-year-old Deibler of Hamburger SC dominated the Men’s 100m event by touching the wall first in a top qualifying time of 52.32 minutes. He was followed by 24-year-old Benjamin Starke of SG Neukolln e.V. Berlin, who earned the second fastest qualification
spot, clocking 52.36 seconds. SSG Leipzig’s 23-year-old Hannes Heyl followed them into the finals, claiming the third fastest spot, with a timing of 53.56 seconds.
Steffen was 2.50 seconds slower than Michael Phelps’s world record of 49.82 seconds, set at the 2000 Rome World Championships. His qualification time was 3.37 seconds away from the European best of 49.95 seconds, made by Milorad Cavic at the same World Championships.
The German swimmer also failed to improve the national record, with a difference of only 1.10 seconds.
In the initial lap, Deibler’s considerably good start placed him 0.17 seconds ahead of the second fastest swimmer, as he clocked a time of 24.05 seconds against Starke’s 24.22 seconds effort. They were followed Heyl, who was only 0.02 seconds slower than
Starke and completed his lap in the third place, clocking 24.24 seconds.
In the next half of the race, Starke cruised his way to the finishing wall, to overcome the fastest swimmer, but was only able to cover a lead of 0.03 seconds, as Deibler out-touched him on the finishing wall by 0.14 seconds.
Starke managed a lead of 1.20 seconds over Hannes, to earn the second fastest spot in the final.
Steffen was extremely happy with his top qualification effort, expressing that he will try to reach the top of the podium in the final. In addition, these swimmers will once again compete with each other in the final of the same event, to secure their spots
in the German team to China.
