Stefano Domenicali confident about Fernando Alonso’s ability to win – Formula 1 news
Team boss for Ferrari, Stefano Domenicali, is confident that Fernando Alonso’s driving abilities can earn back their lead in the drivers’ championship.
Alonso had been leading the championship for most of the season but as Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing won his third consecutive race in the Korean GP, he fell behind six points in the second place. Vettel has also succeeded in winning his fourth consecutive
race this weekend at the Indian GP which has only widen his lead to thirteen points.
Ferrari had been struggling with some upgrades that they introduced in their car which not gave the results that they had been expecting. The team had promised a better car for Alonso ahead of the Indian GP. Their efforts have finally paid off as Alonso’s
pace looked good on the Buddh International Circuit. Despite starting from the fifth position on the grid, the driver succeeded in attaining a second place at the end of the race.
Red Bull is being anticipated to win the championship this year too but Domenicali thinks that if they can catch up with McLaren then they also have a chance to beat Vettel’s pace.
“In terms of approach it's something that we need to keep in the future,” he said. “We know that in the race everything is a bit different and it is clear that at this moment Red Bull has a better car, but we cannot cry, we need to work at it non-stop. What
I said to my guys is that in the 1982 football World Cup our team was not the strongest but we won the title. We have the luxury that in Fernando we have the No. 1 driver so we will continue to fight up until the end.”
Christian Horner, who is the team principal for Red Bull, also admitted that Alonso is a quality driver and that he has been very consistent in his races. He confessed that in order to keep their lead in the title run they will have to keep performing up
to their potential.
Domenicali added that they need to keep fighting and keep in mind that others are doing the same but that should not be the reason for letting their rivals off the hook.
