Star Wars subtitles

Question

Does anyone know how to turn on the subtitles on the original Star Wars trilogy special edition DVDs? Choosing any of the subtitles from the Languages menu doesn't work, and it won't let you use the Subtitles button on the remote control during the film. This means I can't get ANY subtitles in any of the films, including the bits where Greedo is talking, and Jabba the Hutt is talking.
