Sophia Young stars as San Antonio Silver Stars roll past Chicago Sky 84-74 – WNBA Recap
On Tuesday night, Sophia Young netted 19 points to lead five San Antonio Silver Stars players in double figures and guided the Silver Stars to an 84-74 win over Chicago Sky at Allstate Arena. With this victory, San Antonio rose
to the top of both WNBA conferences) with a 7-1 record.
Rookie forward Danielle Adams came off the bench with 16 points while Becky Hammon posted 14 points and five assists for San Antonio, who have won three consecutive games after their only defeat of the season against Phoenix Mercury
on June 21.
Ruth Riley and Danielle Robinson both finished with 10 points. Epiphanny Prince led Chicago with 19 points, four assists and four steals. Sylvia Fowles recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game best 12 rebounds while Erin
Thorn had 14 points and four assists in the second straight defeat of the Sky. Cathrine Kraayeveld punctuated 10 points along with two three-pointers for Chicago.
Although Chicago’s forward centre Michelle Snow added just two points in the loss but this game was one of the memorable ones for her.  The 31-year-old grabbed three of her seven rebounds in the first half to become only the 12th
player in the league to reach 2,000 boards.
The teams started the game on even terms, with neither able to break away. The Silver Stars took a 15-10 lead with 02:21 to go in the opening period, however, Chicago scored the last six points of the quarter to carry a 16-15 lead
into the second.
The second quarter panned out in exactly the same way. The Silver Stars raced to a 32-28 advantage with 02:48 to go in the first half. Chicago again played well in the closing minutes of the quarter and went on a 9-2 run, taking
a 37-34 lead into the locker room.
San Antonio started the third quarter better and cut the deficit to just one, 45-44. They then broke the late quarter jinx and scored 11 points in the last two and half minutes of the third to neutralize the Sky assault. With nearly
forty seconds to go in the third, Hammon canned two straight to reduce the deficit to 53-54. However, Prince responded with a pull up jumper to give Chicago a 56-53 lead.
Chicago stretched their lead to 5, four minutes into the frame. However Silver Stars reeled off a 19-8 spurt in the ensuing passage and with 2:48 to go in the game, they raced to a 74-68 lead.
As the last quarter entered its closing minutes, the Silver Stars went on a free throwing riot. They took a total of 10 free throws in the last 1:05. Danielle Robinson made all of her six attempts in that span as the Silver Stars
sealed the win.
