Sergio Garcia missed out on a chance to make it into the top-10 in the Official World Golf Rankings
Chris Wood’s eagle putt on the final hole of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters ruined Sergio Garcia’s dream of making it into the top-10 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
The Spaniard star needed a victory in the tournament to break the top-10 mark for the first time in two years.
He shared the clubhouse lead with a 17-under par tournament score, with Wood still in the field. Entering the 18th hole in the final round, Wood was trailing Garcia and George Coetzee with one stroke.
At that time, Garcia was preparing himself for the sudden-death playoffs. However, he did not knew that he will have to go home with second position in hand, as Wood eagled the final hole, to outshine his opponents at the Doha Golf Club.
Despite losing in the final moments of the tournament, Garcia was happy with his overall run in the event and said that he will take positives out of his performance during the week.
The Spaniard got off to a steady start on Sunday, as he recorded two birdies against a lone bogey on the front nine of the course. Thereafter, he picked up pace and added five shots to his scorecard on the back nine of the course.
Coetzee, in the meantime, also played brilliantly well, as he carded six birdies and an amazing eagle, against a lone bogey, to card a seven-under par 65. Both Coetzee and Garcia finished tied for the second position on the leaderboard. This was Coetzee’s
21st top-10 finish on the European Tour.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, Garcia praised the way Chris finished his campaign in the tournament.
“Chris hit a great drive and a great six iron and then a wonderful putt,” the Ryder Cup star said afterwards. “Obviously he's been trying for a while and he deserves it, and after the start he had today, it's quite impressive for him to come back the way
he did and win.  I gave it my best effort”.
Andy Sullivan, in the meantime, also fired a seven-under par 65, thanks to nine birdies against two bogeys, to record a top-10 finish in the event. He moved from tied 45th position to the shared ninth spot on the leaderboard, in the final round.
