My dad has an antique National M1 carbine that he wants to sell. It is in excellent condition and has never been rebuilt. How much should he ask for it?

  1. Go to a gun shop and ask them to appraise it.  Hope it doesn't say property of US Government on it otherwise that's a huge offense

  2. Roarman was right about the appraisal. There are many collectors who would like to have one or even hunters. These are not rare at all so condition is the key factor.

However he was wrong about the U.S. marking. A great many were sold as surplus especially after the weapon was retired. My brother bought one thathadd been stored in a National Guard armory about 10 yr. ago.

  3. Depends on a couple of things.  The M-1 carbine was produced by a number of companies.  Mine is an Erma, which is less desirable.  Inland, Rock-Ola (the jukebox company) and IBM are some of the most sought after.  If your dad's is a National Postal Meter (what you refer to as a "National") it could be worth a nice chunk of change.  Mine ran about $350.00. Again, mine is not a widely sought after brand. I agree with the others on this post to check with a gun dealer near you.  Also there are a few good sites to get a feel for the price.  gunsamerica.com is one. Google "M-1 Carbine" to see what you come up with.
