Salton Chiming Wall Clock is chiming...

Question

We have a Salton Quartz Chiming Wall Clock that bongs the hours on the hour and then plays the Big Ben melody. Occasionally, the first few bongs on the hour are many times louder and more annoying than the normal bongs. This is a battery powered clock with fresh batteries. Are there electronics within the clock/chiming mechanism that may be faulty?
