Sabine Lisicki takes down Misaki Doi to enter the fourth round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number 62, Sabine Lisicki of Germany continued her brilliant form at the Wimbledon Championships, as she defeated the unseeded Japanese competitor, Misaki Doi in the third round of the mega event on Saturday.
The crafty German took merely 69 minutes of play to oust Doi in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to book a spot in the pre-quarter-final round of the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Lisicki performance in the Saturday’s matchup was far better than her world ranking suggests, as she beat her opponent in every segment of the game, giving her absolutely no chance to settle in the game. The German serve remained
unbroken throughout the contest, with Lisicki successfully defending the four break points she faced from Doi.
Although Lisicki’s serve lacked something to be desired, she brilliantly secured 25 out of 31 points in the match to come out as the winner. She had five chances to break the Japanese serve and she converted three of those opportunities
to outplay Doi in straight sets.
21-year-old Lisicki came under the spot light when she made a huge upset in the second round of Wimbledon last week, defeating the French Open Champion, Li Na of China, in a three-set thriller 3-6, 6-4, 8-6. She continued her belligerent
form in the third round as well, absolutely devastating Doi to inch closer to the quarter-final rounds of Wimbledon.
The Japanese, who had already suffered 12 out of 20 defeats in the current WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season, proved a mismatch for the fury of Lisicki in the Saturday’s encounter. Doi registered just 10 winners in the entire
contest, in contrast to the German’s 27, to remain at a disadvantage. She had four break chances in the game but carelessly squandered all of them to let Lisicki away with an easy victory.
Lisicki had a blasting start to the opening set and broke early to put some early pressure upon the Japanese, who appeared in all sorts of confusion right from the start. The German belted 13 elegant winners to wrap up the opener
at 6-4 and got one up in the contest to get a commanding position.
Things exacerbated for Doi in the next set, as she suffered two more serve breaks from Lisicki to submit the game to her at 2-6, letting her into the fourth round of Wimbledon.
Lisicki will face the Czech opponent, Petra Cetkovska, in the next encounter for a berth in the quarter-finals of the mega event.
