Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers, has warned the fans not to get over excited after seeing Raheem Sterling perform so well at such a young age, insisting that the winger still needs to go a long way to become an Anfield star.
The 17-year old has arguably been one of the best performers for the Reds during their slow start to the 2012/13 campaign. His scintillating runs and prodigious dribbling ability has already earned him scores of admirers, with many going as far as earmarking
him as a future http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 celebrity.
However, the Northern Irishman has got a more cautious approach towards the English footballer. He was of the opinion that Sterling has just only started his career at Anfield, and labelling him now as the next EPL star was premature.
Sterling has so far made just 8 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, and is yet to score his first competitive goal.
“With young players, you have to be careful. They can be elevated above their station too quickly,” Rodgers told the reporters in an interview.
“That is a part of it in this country. They have one good game and they get elevated to superstar status.”
The former Swansea boss also underscored that the media has got the habit of embellishing the rising young players and in most of the cases, they end up having mediocre careers.
The winger is currently a part of Noel Blake’s Under 19 squad, and is set to feature in the Three Lions upcoming game against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 at Hamburg.
Even though the Ulsterman felt that the juvenile forward has the calibre to play at the Under 21 level, he welcomed the FA’s decision for not making that leap, as he felt that he will be better off currently to feature at the Under 19 grade.
“It is all about individual needs. It might look great on the back pages that he is involved in the Under-21s, but the reality is that this is a kid who has made great strides over the last few weeks; he was absolutely fantastic through pre-season,” he added.
