Roberta Vinci cripples Yanina Wickmayer to cruise into round three – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Italian star, Roberta Vinci, slew the Belgian ace, Yanina Wickmayer, with a breadstick at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Wednesday. She manipulated a 6-1 6-2 victory against the 22-year-old to book a place in the round of 16 at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association)
clay court event taking place in Madrid, Spain.
The Italian veteran got the better of Wickmayer after capitalising on five out of nine break chances in just under an hour. Battling each other for the fifth time, Vinci not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 3-2 against the Belgian but also breezed
into the third round at this Premier Mandatory event.
Vinci stormed into Park Manzanares and earned the desiderated break in the opening game to jump to a 2-0 lead. After Wickmayer held her serve in the third game, the Italian unleashed flurry of massive groundstrokes and went on a four games rampage. She brushed
off both breakpoints she faced and cashed in all three break opportunities to inch towards glory.
Ranked 20th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Vinci carried her winning ways in the proceeding set. After the world number 32 kept her serve in the fourth game, Vinci unveiled herself again and stroke out the last four games in a row. The Italian was
never threatened with any barrier and capitalised on two out of six break opportunities to formulate a 6-2 success.
The 29-year-old spilled more errors and clobbered a poor first serve share of 57 per cent as compared to her rival’s 81 per cent. However, she spectacularly availed 21 out of 23 points on it and ended the deal by bagging 59 points.
Next up for Vinci is the Polish number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, who slaughtered Sara Errani with a bagel to set-up this clash.
The Czech qualifier, Lucie Hradecka, also stole the show after stunning her third seeded compatriot, Petra Kvitova, in straight sets in their second meeting. 105th ranked Hradecka not only avenged her loss against the 22-year-old at the US Open
two years ago but also step forward into the pre-quarters at this tournament.
