my husband took the asvab and scored very well on it. He was offered Quartermaster rate. Being that Qms do the navigation for the ships, he will most likely be on ships ALL THE TIME RIGHT? If he had taken a different rate such as IT would he be on land more? And what kind of jobs can he get once he leaves the navy if he doesn not make a career out of it ?

  1. Yeah, QMs do a lot of sea time. IT work is boring.  I'd say go MA.

  2. IT thats what i am. Im in the Army though

  3. If you are concerned with your husband being on ships a lot you should talk him out of joining the Navy. But if he is dead set on joining the Navy, have him ask about the 'Sea Bees'. They do construction type work for the Navy. But just because you are joining a particular branch of service, you don't get full access to 'pick and choose' what rate you want. They have to look at what is needed and based on your husbands ASVAB scores they will try to give him a job that 'fits' his skill level.

So while an IT rate may actually do more time on land than at sea, there isn't a guarantee that he will be offered that rate. He has to pick from what they offer. And they will offer rates (jobs) based on what they need at the moment.

For the Navy, his best bet is to try get into a technical rate. ET, ST, FC, RM to name a few. That way he will get a fair amount of technical training that he can use should he decide to get out. Things may have changed since I was in the Navy, but back then QM wasn't a technical rate. And that particular rate doesn't translate to civilian work very well. There aren't many civilian jobs that require you to navigate a ship.

  4. IT
