Question:

Property theft question!???

I am currently living overseas and today discovered that my storage unit in the US was broken into. I intend to file a police report in the early morning there, but I personally cannot be there for a couple more weeks. What can I expect from the police in a situation where I am not present and obviously cannot say for sure what is missing?

  1. I lived in a bad neighborhood a few years back and found the Cleveland Police that came out were absolutely useless. I do have policeman friends but I hope you have a good insurance agent because you won't get your stuff back.

Do you have a friend stateside to check into your stuff? We lost a lot before we moved out. It was a punk from the area and the people were afraid to turn him in.

  2. wow, you have it bad. Maybe you can asked someone that been to your house recently, and asked them what's missing. I personally think it was someone close to you, that know you're gone. You should get fingerprint results. It's difficult, because you're not coming back anytime soon right? Good luck!

  3. Here’s what I’d do:

Call your insurance company (hopefully your insured) and give them the “heads up” as to what happened.

Call the storage company and see if they made a police report. If so, get the original police case number from them.

I’d go ahead with attempting to make a police report in the morning over the phone. They might tell you just to wait until you get back to make a report or maybe they’ll accommodate you over the phone. If they will take a report over the phone, give them the original case number from the storage company (if they made a report) or get new case number from police. Advise the officer taking the report that you will not be back for a few weeks to determine exactly what’s missing but you’d like it on record that a break-in occurred and you'll provide a list of items stolen later.

When you get back, determine what’s missing and/or damage to your property. Call the police, give them your case number and your items missing or damaged.  They should make a supplemental report to the original documenting what was stolen or damaged.

Then re-contact your insurance company with the case number so they can obtain the police report and get your claim going.
