Premier League News: Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United
Liverpool
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has praised his side’s character and fighting ability in coming back from their 2-0 deficit at Old Trafford. Even though Liverpool lost 3-2 against arch rivals Manchester United, Gerrard stated that he was proud of how his
side approached the game and was impressed by Liverpool’s fighting style of play. Liverpool was the second best side during most parts of the match but sought a good come back in the second half. Liverpool failed to make many opportunities but were able to
wobble the Red Devils’ defence on various occasions. Gerrard claimed that every time a side travelled to Old Trafford, one had to keep possession from United or the home side would torment them with every opportunity they get.
"We kept the ball away from them and I thought we passed it really well; of course we had to be edgy in the first half because we were away from home. I thought second half we were much more positive and played some terrific stuff but you get nothing for
that. When you go to places like that you have to create chances from your possession and score goals. We scored two but it was not enough," claimed the English national side Captain.
Manchester City
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has issued a warning to their league rivals, claiming that star striker Carlos Tevez can down any side following his inspirational performance against Wigan over the weekend. The striker managed to score the first
goal thanks to a weak clearance by Mohamed Diame, which led to Tevez opening the scoring. Later, the forward set up the easiest of goals for midfielder Yaya Toure for a simple tap in as City won their first away game of the season. The manager, who recently
gifted the captains armband to the Argentine, claimed that during the summer, he had a word about the responsibility to Tevez in the summer. Mancini stated that Tevez is an important player and can further improve as a captain. Mancini was delighted by the
player’s form and fitness but stated that Tevez was still not in his top form and could still improve.
Manchester United
Former Fulham Defender Chris Smalling is currently having the time of his life at Manchester United. Apart from his recent inclusion in United’s first team, the player has been selected in England’s U-21 squad by manager Stuart Pearce to take part in European
Championship.  The side would be travelling to face Romania next month and the striker claimed that his confidence is at an all time high at the moment. Smalling added that he would travel with the U21 squad and coming to United has really helped him. The
defender claimed that all the minutes played for the international side as well as the club would really help him develop as a player. Smalling pointed out that the only way he can improve is to have more minutes on the pitch. He vowed to work hard in training
and feel the real pressure while playing on the pitch.
Newcastle United
Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has talked down any speculations regarding Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given, making an emotional return to St James’ Park. Newcastle’s current number 1 choice Steve Harper has suffered a painful shoulder injury while playing
against Everton and the side may well be looking for a replacement. The 34-year-old Shay Given spent 12 years at Newcastle United before shifting to Manchester City owing to the relegation of the Magpies last season. Given managed to spend the last season
as a first choice goal keeper at the Eastlands but lost the number 1 jersey to Joe Hart, who has been sensational for the high spending club. Yet, Hughton has stated that he will not be interested in talking to Roberto Mancini over a possible move over the
34-year-old and would try out the second choice till Harper makes a full recovery.
