Patriots trade Randy Moss back to Minnesota

The New England Patriots have decided to cut ties with Randy Moss, trading him to the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday morning.

After voicing his disappointment publically at not having a contract beyond this season, Moss was told by head coach Bill Belichick to keep his opinions to himself. Now it seems after his receptionless performance on Monday night against the Dolphins, the Patriots have decided enough is enough and traded him to the Vikings.

The Patriots acquired Moss for a fourth round pick in 2007.

In return for the All-Star, New England will receive a third round draft pick in a blockbuster trade. Many will wonder why the Pats have settled for such low price for one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, but a 33-year-old in the last year of his contract doesn’t hold much trade value.

The trade now means New England are loaded with picks in the 2011 draft. They hold the rights to Oakland’s first round pick, Carolina’s second round pick and a fourth round pick from Denver.

Moss will make $6.4 million in base salary this season and will return to the team that drafted him as the 21st overall pick in the 1998 draft. He spent seven seasons in Minnesota before moving to the Oakland Raiders for two years.

In his first season with the Patriots he caught 98 passes for 1,493 yards and set an NFL record 23 TDs in a season.
