  1. It is grade system like on a spelling test in elementary school.  Lower the mistakes the better the grade.  I know you realize that.  There some odd scoring system used in one golf event in which higher is better.  But, it is just too different to be interesting because I have no experience with anything other than par.  The greatest difference between the games you know better and golf is that when you become emotionally p.o.ed in golf your game becomes even worse.  Baseball:  you throw harder, swing harder, or use an elbow to rebound in a basketball game and you up the level of your play.  I am the world's worst golfer and just gave the game up a long while back.  Why play a sport in which you cannot get mad and change your game?   Golf is really a skill game and you need lessons to enjoy it.  But below par is still better than above par.  It does sound kind of odd now that you mention it in your question!

  2. simply, because in golf, its easy to get a big score. it takes skill and practice to get small scores.  any one can go out the course and slap balls everywhere for a high score.

  3. ahaha, when i was a lil youngster, before my passion before the game, i asked the same question. But, its whoever takes the least amount of shots wins. If it was the most, a little baby would be winning the british open.

  4. Well, it's like a drug screen.  That is the only time being negative is a good thing.  It's like card games where the winner of the game is the person who has no more cards.  The lower your score the better.  There is this thing that is called the modified stableford scoring system in which a positive score is a good score, so the highest score is the winning score.  It's like bizarro world in golf.  Everything is the opposite of what it is normally.  Golf started in Scotland so the golf gods may have had too much whiskey during the development of the game.  That is one of the theories of why there are 18 holes in golf(because they ran out of whiskey after the 18th hole).

  5. Simple...whoever holes out in the fewest strokes wins.  What's so hard about that??  Same as whoever crosses the finish line in the lowest time, etc....get it???

Quit being so cerebral and have fun!

  6. The scoring system of the 'hole games' you've play awards points for getting it in the 'hole' and are the goal is to put as many in the hole as you can.

Golf's award is how you GOT TO THE HOLE, meaning how many strokes it takes to put it in the hole.  Since winning is the result of a better player, it is obvious that the player with the least amount of strokes to hole it will win.  Every stroke is counted as 1 'point', errors such as lost balls, out of bounds incur penalty points.  So the player with the lowest number of strokes (points) is the better player and therefore is the winner.

Everyone will end up putting the ball in the hole 18 times.  So if the award system is to award for getting the ball in-the-hole, everyone will have the SAME score.    That's not a very smart way to compete, is it?

  7. The main object of the game is to go through the course with as few strokes as possible.  The one with the lowest total of strokes wins.    Simple.

  8. (((YAWN)))

  9. loaded question.  should i talk strokes? suggestion: throw the scorecard away, learn to hit the ball, and enjoy the fact that you didn't have to mow all that grass.

  10. Ok...to put this as simple as I can......Its not the quantity of shots that allow a low score.....it is the quality of shots that does so.  The fewer the strokes that it takes to get the ball in the hole the better.......similar with basket ball......if a team shoots 25% from the field....and another shoots 45 %   which team do you think has the best shot of winning?

  11. Because you got a small score that means you were able to succeed at your goal faster than anyone else and that means you are doing good.
