New York Jets coach Rex Ryan does not disappoint any reporters looking for a good sound bite and that was the case on Thursday.
The Jets coach speaking at an event attended by business men from Long Island was in his usual confrontational mood as he made his first appearance in front of the press after the end of the 2011-12 season.
Ryan spoke about his team’s 8-8 season telling the attending audience that the team has scars from what happened this year.
"We got some scars this year from this. Anybody who doesn't have scars is either lying to you or never dared. One thing about us: We dare. We put it out there -- I put it out there -- that we want to be great."
The Jets ended their 2011-12 season 8-8 and missed out on the playoffs for the first time under Ryan’s tenure.
That scenario though did not pan out and more painfully for the Jets it was their city rivals the Giants who went on to lift the Lombardi trophy.
The failure was even worse for coach Ryan who had earlier in the season had talked about the Jets going on to win the Super Bowl based on the fact that the Jets had reached the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game twice in the past two seasons.
Personal attacks by players on each other and locker room battles played a big role in the Jets losing season.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez came under fire from both fans and veteran players for his lack of leadership under adversity while his poor performances in the final games of the season made things even worse.
Ryan though once again talked about Super Bowl glory showing off his ring that he won as part of the coaching staff for the Baltimore Ravens who won Super Bowl XXXV and said that he plans on getting a new one very soon.
“I’m the only one (in my family) with only one Super Bowl ring, but I’m planning on getting another one, and I’m planning on getting it quickly.”
The Jets will look to the new season to bounce back and if they can get over their player discipline issues may even fulfil Ryan’s dream of making it to the Super Bowl.
