Did NHRA lower the Top Fuel dragster and Nitro Funny cars to run 1000ft. instead of the full 1/4 mile (1360ft) because of the death of Scott Kalitta? Wikipedia says so but sometimes they are unreliable.

  1. Yes, they did.  It was a rash decision but that what happens when someone dies apparently.

  2. That is exactly why they did it and why it only applies to the fuelers.  They are the only cars that run 300+ MPH in the 1/4 mile.  The current Top Fuel and Funny Car records are 336 and 333 respectively.  You have to understand that when most of these tracks were built the fuelers were only going 200 in the 1/4.  There simply isin't enough run-off room if something goes tragically wrong at the end of a run like it did with Scott Kalitta.  This is however only a stop-gap soultion in IMHO.  Very few fans or drivers, from what I've heard in the interviews at the races, like the new rule.  1/4 mile drag racing is a uniquely American form of racing.  To the best of my knowledge we did it first and we absolutely do it best.  The long term solution is for the older tracks to rebuild and move into the 21st century along with all other forms of motorsports.

  3. Yep you got it all right...It,ll stay unless the start slowing down the cars...Say restrictor plate!!!!
