Michael Schumacher’s fastest lap at Jerez was a ‘show’ for Germany: Mark Webber
Red Bull’s Mark Webber has said that Michael Schumacher’s fastest lap at the pre-season test session in Jerez was a ‘show’ for Germany.
Merceded GP’s Nico Rosberg had stated earlier in the week, that his team will need to work even harder on their new car. One day after his statement, Michael Schumacher scored the fastest time in Jerez using super-soft Pirelli tyres.
However, Mark Webber believes that it was just a little publicity stunt for Schumacher’s fans, as the 7 times World Champion was almost 2 seconds off the pace immediately after the fast run.
“It was probably just a little show for Germany. The super-soft tyre is much faster but they only last for one lap,” said Webber.
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, however, was not so surprised.
“Schumi in front? This is not news, he's won more than any of us,” he said.
Michael Schumacher responded to Webber’s statement and denied rumours that this lap time was just a ‘trick’ to ease the burden that has been building on Mercedes.
“I was on a ten-lap run, so I don't know if you can call that very short. It is also true that we are not the only team to have tried these tyres,” said Michael.
Meanwhile, it is also being suggested by some observers that Nick Heidfeld's quick time at Jerez was to appease worried Renault sponsors. Heidfeld recorded the fastest time of the day behind the wheel of the R31 on Saturday. He is currently with Lotus Renault
GP on a temporary basis, filling the spot for Robert Kubica, who is out with an injury.
Amid the word-play, it is going to be interesting to see how Mercedes and Renault perform at the upcoming pre-season test sessions, as consistency is going to be the key to success in 2011.
