Matthew Selt looking forward to play Ryan Day in Round 2: 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
After putting up an excellent snooker show at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria, Australia, Matthew Selt of England was able to defeat the defending champion of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open, compatriot Stuart Bingham by the score line of 5-4 after
facing a tough resistance from the champ.
The clash was expected to finish in Bingham’s favour as he was in good form since the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker event but Selt showed his class and proved everyone wrong.
Bingham was in full swing during his 2012 Wuxi Classic campaign and had hopes to defend his title but all that faded when Selt pushed him down. Selt played sensibly to counter his opponent’s tremendous game and made a huge victory out of the match-up. The
Englishman is up against the Welshman Ryan Day in the second round of the event and is hoping for a positive performance against him as well.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Selt said, “First things first, Stuart didn't play very well and I think he will be the first person to say that. But you've got to take advantage of situations when they come across like that. I thought my
safety was pretty good throughout.”
He added, “I'm playing Ryan Day next, I haven't played him for a few years. I'm looking forward to it. I started to get a little tired towards the end of that match and that probably took the pressure off a little bit because I felt no nerves whatsoever
in the last frame.”
The match-up began with a tremendous two-frame victory by Selt as he claimed 2-0 early lead in the game. Selt could have gone 3-0 but he made some silly mistakes to let Bingham at the table as he cleared the baize in no time and pulled level at 2-2 to finish
the first session.
The second session of the game went the same way as both potters tussled with each other in order to gain a handsome lead. However, both of them were stuck at 4-4 at the end of the second session and took the game into the final decisive frame where Selt
overpowered Bingham to hit the victory by 5-4.
