Social marketing is about creating word of mouth advertising by giving people something to talk about!

Examples of this (in relation to the internet) include starting a blog, a podcast, a forum, or even creating a clever video on youtube or a downloadable mini game. These are designed to be passed around and talked about by people. There has to be some social or entertainment value that will then hopefully cause people to want to know more, as opposed to traditional advertising where it is all about an immediate sale and heavily focused on the actual product.

Overall it's about building a relationship with your customers and potential customers and becoming just a little part of their lives, rather than just making a sale.
