Maria Sharapova has defeated Zheng Jie in the first round in Stanford, to record her first victory over a top-40 ranked player this year. That victory, coupled with what may be described as an honourable defeat to Serena Williams at Wimbledon (it was certainly the world No. 1's toughest match of the tournament), might just indicate the Russian's form is continuing to move in the right direction.
