Marcel Granollers crushes Jeremy Chardy in third round – Rogers Cup 2012
Spanish tennis star, Marcel Granollers, devastated the French contestant, Jeremy Chardy, with a breadstick at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Friday. He jolted down a 6-1, 6-4 victory against the 25-year-old to breeze into the quarters at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Rexall Centre, Toronto.
Granollers showed brilliant abilities to outclass the world number 47 in their second encounter. The players previously fought each other at the Paris Masters last season and after earning this success, the Spaniard not only avenged his defeat but also levelled the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against Chardy.
The 26-year-old thundered into this Emirates Airline US Open Series event. He quickly reeled off the opening three games with a break of serve. After Chardy came on the score sheet for the first time in the fourth game, the Spaniard wiped out the last three games and clicked the opener with a breadstick. He swiped his entire serves without encountering any resistance and converted two out of six break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 27th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Granollers kept momentum running towards the following set and got the critical break in the opening game to jump to a 2-0 lead. Despite squandering his edge in the fourth game, the Spaniard cashed in another break chance in the fifth game to take the upper hand. He held his remaining serves with conviction and subsequently pocketed the set with a 6-4 success.
However, Granollers ran out of luck in the evening session. He was underplayed by the fifth seed, Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia. The Spaniard squandered all three break opportunities and was broken twice, eventually suffering a 4-6, 4-6 shock in one hour and 37 minutes.
The top seed, Novak Djokovic, performed double duty to secure a place in the final four. He eased past America’s Sam Querrey in straight sets in his third round match. The top seed maintained consistency in his game and subsequently overpowered the former world number two, Tommy Haas, in three set to progress at this tournament.
