Jorge Barrios gets 4-year jail term and 8-year driving prohibition - Boxing News
Jorge Barrios, the former WBO super featherweight champion and one of the ace light welterweight pugilists in Argentina, has put a devastating end to his impressive career.
In a recent incident, the Mar del Plata tribunal denounced Jorge guilty of homicide and wrongful injury, hence issuing a four-year prison sentence and the prohibition to drive vehicle for eight years.
According to the details, Jorge was on his way back home in his BMW SUV and while crossing a signal, he accidentally hit a 20-year-old pregnant woman, Yamila Gonzalez. The Argentinean brawler’s vehicle almost ran over the unfortunate Yamila which eventually
led to her sad on-the-spot demise.
Barrios initially ran away from the spot but after the lapse of five hours, went to the nearest police station and surrendered. The three-man tribunal finally gave the decision of January 2010 incident at its recent final hearing and convicted Jorge of killing
not only a six-month pregnant woman but also running over another car during the escape.
According to the final judgement issued by the commission, Jorge will now have to stay in jail for four long years. It must be kept in mind that Yamila’s lawyer asked for a strict 12-year apprehension but it was not seconded by the court. Moreover, in addition
to the above imprisonment, Barrios’ driving license has also been revoked and he will not be allowed to drive any vehicle for a period of eight long years.
Jorge, 36, has been in a total 56 bouts emerging victorious in 50. He has lost just four bouts in his career. The veteran Barrios, also known as ‘La Hiena’, has won several world and national level titles and has made his country proud in various high profiled
bouts.
Barrios became the WBO Latino super featherweight champion after collecting an 11-round technical knockout win over Javier Osvaldo Alvarez. The Argentinean proud, later on, successfully retained the gold against three top class pugilists Orlando Soto, Claudio
Victor Martinet, and Carlos Uribe.
The orthodox Jorge fought his last bout against Wilson Alcorro in October 2010 and since then has not returned to the ring. Barrios was in his prime when he left the ring and nailed Michael Lozada, Moises Castro and several other big names.
This incident has definitely put an end to Jorge’s career and it is almost close to impossible that one of the best light welterweights makes a return in the ring.
