John Mitchell makes three changes in back row for weekend encounter against Griquas - Rugby
South African Rugby Union’s (SARU) provincial side Golden Lions have announced three changes in their backs section for their 2011 Currie Cup away game against the Griquas. The hosts will meet the Lions at GWK Park, Kimberley on July 23.
Lions defeated the Pumas 31 – 27 at Ellis Park, Johannesburg on Friday, July 15 in the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup opener. Lions head coach, John Mitchell, has announced his side for their second match of the tournament on Wednesday, July 20.
Mitchell’s named three changes in the side that defeated the Pumas. According to the statement release on the Club’s official website, injuries and performance related issues have forced the changes that may disturb the winning combination.
Jaco Taute, Dylan des Fountain and Alwyn Hollenbach have been left out of the squad for their weekend clash. They are replaced by the Waylon Murray, Michael Killian and Deon van Rensburg in the squad.
Michael Killian will start at the fullback position in place of injured Jaco Taute. Waylon Murray will take the field as the outside centre in place of injured Alwyn Hollenbach, while Deon van Rensburg has replaced Dylan des Fountain at the winger position.
Mitchell further added, “Michael is in for Jaco who is a week away from playing as he's recovered quicker than we expected, Deon and Waylon come in because I wasn't happy with the performances of Dylan and Alwyn."
Mitchell added that he accepts the fact that the team performance in their opening match was “below par”. However, he acknowledged he is not alarmed by it, and expressed his confidence that the team will continue to develop the winning momentum in future
matches.
Additionally, Mitchell has included JC van Rensburg in the weekend’s match 22. He will start the match at the bench as he looks to take part on the field in the later part of the second-half of the game.
Griquas played a 26 – all draw with the relatively younger Western Provinces side in their Currie Cup opener at Newlands Stadium, Cape Town on Saturday, July 16.
The Lions squad announced by Mitchell for their upcoming weekend encounter against the Griquas includes:
Starting XV : 15 Michael Killian, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Doppies la Grange (captain), 11 Lionel Mapoe, 10 Burton Francis, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Joshua Strauss, 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe,
4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Patric Cilliers.

Replacements : 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 JC Janse van Rensburg, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Dries van Schalkwyk, 20 Michael Bondesio, 21 Hein Cronje, 22 Alwyn Hollenbach.
