Jeff Janov’s Dark Star grabs victory at the 2011 Rolex Farr 40 North American Championship
At the end of the final day of 2011 Rolex Farr 40 North American Championship on Monday, May 30, Dark Star’s Jeff Janov grabbed the title after winning the race with a total of 14 points in eight
races. Dark Star took the first place six times in eight races under the toughest conditions in Long Beach, California.
Dark Star retained its lead on the score board in all three days of the race and in the end, clinched six out of eight races to stand at the top. Frederic Scheer’s Far Niente fell 14 points behind
Dark Star at 28 and took the second place followed by Skian Dhu at third with 29 points.
Piranha, owned by David Voss, trailed Dark Star by 13 points at the end of the second day. In the fourth race of the event, Piranha got an advantage and finished first after Dark Star tacked too close
to it and was forced to push back by the on-water judges.
On the final day, Piranha came strong in the start as it took advantage of the heavy southwest winds blowing up to 14 knots to give Dark Star a tough time but before the finish line, its spinnaker
immersed in water and Dark Star crossed the line.
Janov said after winning the race eventually, “We had amazing competition (with) some great sailors.” While talking to the media, Scheer, owner/driver of Far Niente said, “We were working very hard
to get there. I'm very happy.”
The Long Beach Yacht Club hosted the 2011 Rolex Farr 40 North American Championship at the Rainbow Harbour, which ran from May 28-30.
