Jarolim Vicen defeats Iiya Zdanov in Men’s Singles first round of the Russian Open GP 2011
Slovakia’s Jarolim Vicen advanced into the second round after defeating Russia’s Iiya Zdanov in the Men’s Singles first round of the Russian Open GP 2011, at Vladivostok, Russia, on June 29, 2011.
Jarolim surprised the local crowd by playing top-class badminton against Zdanov and won the fight in three games, by taking a court time of 37 minutes. It was one of the most entertaining matches of the day, as both players put up a remarkable show of quality
play.
The first game progressed with great pace, where both shuttlers delivered a good performance and finished the rallies quickly without wasting opportunities. Both players were moving in the court with relative ease, which made the contest more thrilling as
there was no difference in the quality and skill level of both contestants.
Until the break in the opening set, the Slovak shuttler was leading the game with a slight lead of 11-9. However, after the break, the local player accelerated his pace to tackle the aggression of his rival. Despite a spirited show, Zdanov failed to disturb
the flow of Jarolim, who won the set in just 14 minutes with a 21-16 score on the board.
In the second set, Zdanov bounced back to cheer the crowd by playing a completely different game. He employed more variations in his strokes to tackle down the speed and accuracy of his opponent. He was leading the game with a comfortable margin of 11-7,
in the opening half of the set.
After the break, the Russian left no gap for Jarolim to score points and consequently, levelled the match by winning the second game with a 21-15 margin, in 13 minutes.
In the final set of this interesting fight, Jarolim controlled the rallies from the start of the game and progressed with great pace. He reached at 11-5 in a flash by heavily relying on his hard to return down the line smashes. Jarolim won the final set
in just 12 minutes, with a striking margin of 21-12. The 37-minute three-game fight ended with a 21-16, 15-21 and 21-12 score on the board.
