A 3-wicket haul by Josh Evans compensated for his team’s weak batting performance and enabled Israel to clinch a 17-run win over Portugal in their Group A match, during the ongoing European Championship Division Two Twenty20, on September 5 at Maessonghi
on the Greek island of Corfu.
Portugal won the toss and elected to field first, and Israel opened their innings with Daniel Hyman (3) and Gerrit Grundling (10). The batsmen, however, were unable to set up a substantial opening stand, with Hyman dismissed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zafar-Ali-c98403 (3-0-22-2) after
the openers had posted a paltry combined total of 5 on the board.
Grundling followed soon after, sent back to the pavilion by Jose Pais, and he was followed to the crease by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Raymond-Aston-c84289 (19). The partnership between Aston and Eshkol Solomon (who top-scored for the team with 40) proved more promising and yielded 37 runs,
getting the team up to 55 after which Aston was sent packing by Nadeem Nazar.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danny-Hotz-c52377 (3) remained unimpressive, but Yaniv Razpurker (25*) joined Solomon for a 42-run 5th-wicket stand, which came to an end with the dismissal of Solomon at the hands of Zafar Ali. By this point, the team had reached 103, and some final
contributions from Razpurker and skipper Herschel Gutman (8*) got the team up to a final total of 118, at the expense of 5 wickets.
Portugal made valiant attempts to chase down the target of 119, aided by the persistent effort of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Syed-Tariq-Aziz-c92380 (45), but Evans (3-0-24-3) made sure the team stayed well away from Israel’s total.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Roger-Kirshaw-Pierson-c42135 it out at the crease for long, sent packing by Grundling. Bilal Safdar, who followed him to the crease, managed to apply himself better, contributing
19 runs, and joining Aziz for a 68-run partnership.
However, barring Aziz and Safdar, the remaining batting order was unable to contribute anything more than single-digit individual scores, and Portugal eventually found themselves cut off at 101 – 17 runs short of the target Israel had set them.
