Hi all! I'm thinking about enlisting in the US Navy as a working career. If I do it, I know I'll survive it because many people before me have done it and got through it. When I go in though, I want to serve at least a minimum of 20 years so I can retire with all the benefits. Is it easy to get on a regular sleeping schedule in the Navy on the Navy ships or is there is noise efrom everyone aboad everywhere at any time? Does it get boring on Navy ships on a daily basis, especially the ones stuck out at sea for very long? Is it a typical, 8 hours a day job on a ship? What kinds of things do sailors aboard do after their work shift is up on the ship? Does the Navy allow personal cell phones on the ships for use when off duty? Are Navy ships almost always clean or are there some that are some real shitholes? hahaha! Also, are the rack beds really that small? Can you give me some specific or approximate dimensions of the size of a typical rack bed on a Navy ship? Thanks!

  1. Sorry, shipboard life and regular sleep schedules are incompatable.

My brother found he could function on 8 hours of sleep - even if it was in installments.

Navy ships are usually clean because the sailors have nothing else to do but clean them.

Yes, the beds are really that small. About two feet wide and 6 feet long.

Yes, it gets boring at sea.  You can bring your cell phone but you will probably be out of range.

    Anchors Aweigh!!

  2. I worked 14+ hour days on my ship, so when it was time to crash , I never had any problem falling asleep.  Most problem I had was I was always cold. Cleaning is constantly going on (you will be helping to do that) A rack is typically about the size of a twin bunk bed. There can be doldrums on the ship, especially during an extened deployment but you will be very very busy. Expect to be working hard when underway.

  3. Navy carriers and ship crew quarters are a lot quieter than you think.  Besides, most Navy rates do sea duty.  Ther are a few jobs (like the Sea Bees) are primarily land based because they are construction trades.

  4. you'll be sooooooooo tired, you will sleep anywhere, any time you get. :)

  5. Actually after a short period of time the noise and stuff going on around you does not bother you; coming back off deployment you then have to adjust to the quietso really a short term thing and then you adjust.  Been deployed twice on carriers with Marine squadrons both times we got the noisiest berthing  our roof was the flight deck, under the Nbr 2 wire and the AG machinery room next to us and it took about three days to adjust to that.  Lower in the ship is quiter as is the middle section.
