On Thursday, January 05, 2012 Tamil Nadu qualified for the semi-finals of the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite after ending their match against Maharashtra in a draw at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai.
Maharashtra, resumed their second innings on the final day of the match after having posted 90 runs without a loss, a day earlier.
Openers HH Khadiwale and CG Khurana batted splendidly and made life of the Tamil Nadu bowlers a living h**l.
The two batsmen continued their astounding form as they stood defiant against their rivals in a bid to amass a massive tally in their second innings to create a winnable chance in the contest.
With 217 runs on the board, the batting side suffered their first loss of the day when Khadiwale perished after hammering a superb knock of 105 runs.
Later, when Maharashtra had amassed 224 runs, Khurana lost his wicket after playing an impressive innings of 102 runs.
After the demise of the opening batsmen, it was time for number-three batsman to shine as he gave a remarkable performance with the bat.
The batsman scored 69, as he played an important role in helping his side pile 322 runs before declaring their second innings.
From Tamil Nadu, spinner Sunny Gupta was the most successful bowler in the second innings by bagging two wickets in 19 overs.
Needing just 140 runs to win, Tamil Nadu had a steady start to their innings; however, they lost their first wicket with only 18 runs on the board, as opener fell after playing a knock of nine runs.
It was then,, and middle-order batsman Sunny Gupta, who kept their side in the run chase and stayed unbeaten at the end of the day’s play by posting 45 runs, with Mukund on 21 and Gupta on 13.
From Maharashtra, spinner dominated the bowling department as he grabbed a wicket in the second innings.
J Kaushik was named as the Player of the Match for grabbing five wickets in the game.
