IS IT TRUE TO GROW AVOCADOS YOU HAVE TO HAVE A MALE AND FEMALE AVOCADO TREE PLANTED CLOSE TO EACH OTHER?

  3. Well, not male and female, avocados have "perfect" flowers but there are A and B types that release, and are receptive to, pollen at different times of the day. You need an A nearby if you are growing a B type tree and......you get the idea. In areas like mine this isn't a problem because there are a lot of avocado growing. A great explanation of this is found in the Sunsets Wester Gardener. It even has a chart showing which variety has which type of flower.

    However, to answer your question, NO you do not have to have a male and female avacado tree, there is no such thing. Avacados are "self pollinating" meaning they have both male and female flowers. The pollination is done by butterflies and honey bees. This is why the bees are vital to fruit farms.
