I am going to Australia for six months and am wondering what is the cheapest way to make calls back to teh US?

Is it to get an international phone, I also heard buying a prepaid phone over there is a good idea?

Skype is the way to go for your International calls. And yes, get a prepaid phone for your normal use within Australia. Vodaphone or Virgin seem to be the best value. Vodaphone prepaids aren't sim locked so you would be able to use it in your own country with a sim card from there.

I would have to agree with prepaid phone cards, it will cost you about 10 dollars for 300minutes worth of call (depending on what phone card you get), HOWEVER there is one downfall the 300minutes may actually be 100minutes or 200minutes, it's happened many times they are very sneaky and there isn't much you can do, but either ways it's still cheaper and if it doesn't happen then you're lucky.  And there is no additional fees, once you've run out that's it just buy a new one.

Load Skype onto your computer and if the other person you are calling has Skype to the call is free

if you dont want to use compuets and skpe and gaming consoles and use your ordinary phone, yes, phone cards are the best way to go. my hubbie who is american lives here in oz with me and he always gets phone cards from the local milk bar. you can also get them at newagenceys and petrol stations. they have all diffent kinds so either ask or look to see which is the best for usa. we found one called green apple in the best but differnt stores differnt prices. aslo watch the connection fees. some are really high and even though the per min fee is great the conection fees kill you. but if you make big long alls well it may be better. but yes definitly buy phone cards as calling on the phone is super expensive. you save like 70% using phone cards.
