How to find public records on a person?

I know someone dating a very shady guy. I know his name approximate age and state he lives in. What sites can tell you for free if he is married, divorced, convicted of a crime, etc? I thought most of this was supposed to be public record, but most sites make you pay. Some don't even have correct info if you do pay. Anyone know??

Public does not equate to FREE all the time.  Also, public is not always as "public" as you might think.  Some records do have very specific requirements on who can have access to them.  Also, to find the info you are specifically asking about on a living person on the internet is a violation of their LEGAL right to privacy, therefore would be violating federal privacy laws.
