Question:

How long does it take oil based paint to dry?

I waited 24 hours for it and I have just a thin coat. Help me...

  1. i studied at art college,so i know for a fact that any oil based paint takes ages to dry.

    it depends on your layering and how you paint,whether you use brushes,palette knives,fingers etc.

    you can use air con or dry weather to dry your painting quicker.

    the best part of painting i n oils is that they dont dry quickly-you can change and manipulate your drawing as you determine what you want to achieve.also they colourrs are very rich,which is lovely.

    id guess for 1 thin(mixedwith a thinning medium,eg linseed) layer about 24 hrs before you can paint on top of it.


  2. It definitely depends on how thickly you paint. If you really glop it on, I'd say around 3-4 days before it's "completely" dry. A thin layer diluted with paint thinner shouldn't take long at all. Around a day or less.
